bluebeard’s castle history

Learn About Our History

Perched 224 feet above the harbor of Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas, Bluebeards Castle Resort is more than a vacation destination: it’s a landmark where time-honored architecture meets contemporary island living.

Originally built by the Danish as a watchtower in the late 1600s, the hilltop estate has watched over the Caribbean for centuries, and today invites guests to experience its story, style and spirit.

Historic Property Overview

Bluebeard's Castle is a historic property dating back to the 1600's. The resort occupies an entire hilltop with spectacular views overlooking the harbor and town of Charlotte Amalie. Its signature red rooftops are among the first sights for arriving cruise passengers.

The resort includes a centuries-old fortress bearing the name "Bluebeard," after the infamous pirate, and check-in takes place in the former residence of the Danish governor of the island.

From Danish Fortification to Private Residence

Built in 1689: The original stone tower was constructed by the Danish as a defensive watchtower, offering a panoramic view of the Charlotte Amalie harbor from its hilltop perch. The Danes referred to it as Frederik's Fort or Frederik's Tower.

Sold in 1818: After serving its military purpose, the tower and surrounding lands were sold by the Danish colonial government to a merchant.

Becomes a Grand Residence: In the 1820s, a large residence known as Frederiksberg was built on the property. In 1889, Eduardo Henriquez Moron purchased the estate and used the vantage point to monitor marine activity for his coaling company.

Conversion to a Hotel and Resort

1933

Hotel Conversion

After the U.S. acquired the Virgin Islands in 1917, the tower and residence were renovated and converted into a hotel in 1933 as part of a tourism initiative. President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited in 1934.

1938

Public Works Administration Project

Additional construction was completed as a Public Works Administration (PWA) project in 1938, creating a larger complex with a dining room, bar, and guest accommodations.

1954

Sold to Private Entity

The U.S. government sold the hotel to a private organization in 1954. It later became a timeshare resort.

2011

Rebuilt After Hurricanes

In 2011, the property reopened after renovations. Further rebuilding was necessary after severe damage from hurricanes in 2017.

The Legend of Bluebeard

Pirate Folklore: Contrary to the name, the castle was never home to a pirate named Bluebeard. The moniker originated in the 1800s, when local storytelling blended the island's genuine pirate history with the European folktale of a wealthy nobleman who murdered his wives.

Fictional Origin: The Bluebeard story was popularized by French author Charles Perrault in 1697. It is a fairy tale, not a historical account.

Confusion with Blackbeard: The local legend may have been influenced by the notorious pirate Blackbeard, who is believed to have operated in the St. Thomas area.
